BEHIND GRIDSHELLS: MORPHOGENETIC AND PARAMETRIC DESIGN STRATEGIES

description (EN)

In the Freestyle series of the The Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA), architects unveil their fascination. In this fourth edition, Behind Gridshells, Edoardo Mentegazzi and Joyce Kuiken share their passion for gridshells. This remarkable and light building method enables the design and assembly of freeform structures while using sustainable materials. With it’s many shapes and sizes, a gridshell can perform beautifully as a temporary pavilion, an exhibition space, or as a workshop. But how is a gridshell built? What has already been built, and how? What role can gridshells play in a contemporary architecture that is both sustainable and uses digital design and production methods? In 12 case studies, we take you on a journey across the world in search of the most striking examples of gridshell architecture and the answers to these questions.
